As much as publishing is about books and business I’ve learnt that it’s also about building relationships and talking to as many people as you can. I’ve found this helps motivate and focus me as well as giving me more ideas, and yes, hopefully raising my profile in a competitive labour market.
At these early stages I want to know how long it took people who have just started out on their careers to get that all important job. I want to know what kind of work experience they did, what they studied, what their first job was, what they do now, and so on and so on. It’s a way to measure my own progress.
As I had already made a friend (I am a social animal you know) at my last/first place of work experience I decided to write to her with a list of formal questions. This led to a few more contacts who kindly agreed to pass on their recent experiences of getting into publishing.
I have been give kind permission to post their responses on this blog. At the moment there are three lovely people who have shared their experiences and I have tried to find candidates from both large and independent publishers.
